There are areas where further improvement is still required, including service-related issues that will be addressed with Marina del Rey before we enter into a contract for next year’s event.

Harold Lederman has been inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame. Induction weekend is June 19-21 at the Tampa Holiday Inn Westshore in Tampa. Congratulations, Harold! Dennis Milton was honored at the NY Golden Gloves finals on April 2 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Winning four consecutive Gloves titles from 1981 to 1984, Dennis was one of seven inductees into the NY Golden Gloves Hall of Fame. Fellow Ring 10 Board member Iran Barkley accepted this honor on behalf of former WBA world super welterweight champion Davey Moore who also won four consecutive Gloves titles. Moore died tragically in 1988 in a freak car accident. Dennis also trained 141-pound novice Arnold Gonzalez who reached the 2015 Golden Gloves finals, losing a close hard-fought decision. Congratulations to them both on a great performance throughout the tournament!

Judicial intervention has stalled the $760 million NFL Concussion lawsuit settlement that was reached with the NFLPA last summer. This case has shined a much needed light on the very serious matter of head trauma in contact sports. Unfortunately, no union exists in boxing that would help represent the countless number of fighters who suffer from these injuries, nor is there a central governing body against which such claims can be raised. Ring 10 has reached out to former NFL TE Brent Jones who formed a venture capital company, Northgate Capital (as featured on an episode of HBO’s ‘Real Sports’), in hopes that he can propose some funding ideas to support unionization efforts.

Opening
The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the customary 10 count in memory of those the boxing community has lost. Matthew Saad Muhammad, a former light heavyweight champion and Hall of Famer known for his bruising, gritty warrior style, passed away on May 25. Having suffered from CTE related symptoms, the several battering rounds this courageous fighter endured throughout his career may have attributed to his death. Found sleeping in the streets of Philadelphia abandoned as a child, he was named Matthew Franklin after the parkway near which he was found and was raised in foster homes. Sadly, he became homeless again years after his glorious boxing career ended and lived in a city shelter. Among the hundreds in attendance at his funeral were fellow Philly fighters, including Tim Witherspoon, Mike Rossman,
Eugene Hart, Earl Hargrove, Kevin Howard and Tyrone Crawley.
His 1980 rematch with Yaqui Lopez earned Ring Magazine Fight of the Year honors and demonstrates the heart and determination of this fearless warrior. Instead of falling to Lopez’s eighth-round onslaught, Saad Muhammad rallied. The champion willed himself to knock down Lopez four times in the 14th round to defend the World Boxing Council’s light-heavyweight title. Check out the incredible Round 8 action below:
May he rest in peace…..

Former heavyweight champion Jimmy Ellis died on May 6 of complications from dementia. Ellis took the hard road to the championship, having fought many of the great heavyweights in Ali, Frazier, Shavers, Patterson and Lyle, just to name a few. 39-year old Long Island boxer Jacques Louis (aka The Haitian Warrior) was tragically killed in a car accident on the Southern State Parkway on April 18. Former Ring 10 Board Member Richard Thornblad died at around 6AM on April 14, 2014 at age 62 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in the Bronx, New York. He was hospitalized for an intestinal blockage about a week ago but the cause of death was an infection which shot through his system and couldn’t be contained by antibiotics. Richard is survived by his wife Joanie and two daughters.Just before his death, Richard was visited by his closest friends, all of whom were members of Ring 10, Mike Bernard, John Zervos, John Marano, Vinnie Serratore and Mike Trapani. We all loved Richard, a gregarious fun loving person, who loved boxing and the people in it, for his entire life.He will especially be missed by those who knew him for the dinners he always would arrange for his Ring 10 friends. Good Bye Richard. We will miss you and always love you. Rest in Peace. You will never be forgotten.
Joe Noble donated several vintage boxing programs and printed materials to be preserved by Ring 10. As no such archive currently exists, the establishment of some form of system was discussed and will require further consideration.

Ring 10 has now been in existence for three years. Read all of the heartfelt testimonials of gratitude on the Ring 10 homepage from those we have helped during this time, like this one from Mark McPherson:
“Ring 10 has been instrumental in my recovery from surgery! When I thought there was nowhere to go, they were there with aid for me and my family. I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT COMPASSION. I’m thankful for Matt Farrago, a potential opponent in yesteryear – a greater ally today, as the founder of Ring 10. There is still great compassion in this world.”
Mark Breland recently visited Wilfred Benitez in Puerto Rico who is in need of both physical and cognitive therapy to develop his muscles while he continues to battle serious health issues. Both Ring 10 and the Mark Breland Foundation continue to look for ways to provide support to this suffering former champion. The Foundation is also supporting fighters to obtain PET scans that will provide more meaningful information regarding brain function and extent of damage.
Ring 1 is holding a Hall of Fame banquet on May 18 in Philadelphia entitled “United We Stand”. Tickets are $60. Contact Matt if you are interested in attending and group travel arrangements can be made.
